SESSION 1

The Carer's Map - Finding Your Way From Wit's End

This creative session offers a way to relocate yourself in your experience of caring, whether or not you've ever been to Wit's End.

  • No arts experience necessary
  • Bring some colouring materials (pencils, felt pens) or simply a pen and paper.

If you are called away or need to attend to someone the recording will be available for you.

SESSION 2

Beyond Agitation 1:

Understanding Distress and Supporting Connection

This session explores context - and what is happening inside the communication of distress, as well as deepening an understanding of our human desire to feel safe.

  • Bring notebook and pen.

This session refers to distress in both the carer and cared for experiences.

SESSION 3

Beyond Agitation 2: Insights Into Trauma, Vulnerability and Emotional Memory.

Not all distress is due to trauma or illness, but some distress may have beginnings that reach far beyond the current situation. This session touches on what agitation may feel like when time has not erased significant (possibly invisible) emotional memories. And the need for compassionate responses for ourselves too.

  • Bring colouring materials (pencils or felt pens) or simply pen and paper.

Note: this session is not focused on trauma but on understanding what is needed when we witness significant distress and agitation.

SESSION 4

Home:

"When we realised our life had permanently changed, we both felt we wanted to go home even though lived at home."

"I want to go home" is one of the most universal human statements that we have. But what is home? What are people longing for? Is it a time, a place, a feeling inside?

  • Bring an old magazine for any images, or colouring pens, pencils.. or simply a pen and paper.

This session concludes Finding Your Way: A Creative Journey For Family Carers: from Wit's End to Home through meaning and compassion.

About

Many family carers are doing extraordinary things in circumstances that are often incredibly difficult. I have listened to family carers describe the courage, love, exhaustion and loneliness that can accompany caring.

I have also heard repeatedly that what people most need is practical, timely and relevant support that genuinely helps with the realities of everyday life. Many people find themselves navigating fragmented services, complex systems, long waiting times, and support that arrives too late—or not at all.

Changes are needed in how family carers are supported, with practical, timely and effective help that reflects the realities of everyday caring.

While I cannot change those wider systems, my programmes offer valuable insights, understanding and useful support around some of the most common (and often invisible) experiences of family carers. People feel less alone, understand their responses are normal, access some immediate relief and identify small possibly actions.

"I loved the gentle way you ran the course...you made it possible for me to reconnect with parts I'd been missing. I highly recommend it."
"It was really supportive. Your map exercise helped me explain things to the rest of the family"
"Your knowledge and skills really show because you explain everything so well and it's all based on reality! I get more each time I come on one of your courses."
